A recent study on teen driving reported that 681,000 people were involved in accidents in 2008 where a teenager was driving. An article in The Times Herald states that the study showed that over 40,000 people were injured and nearly 30 percent of those who died in the crashes were cyclists, pedestrians, or occupants of other vehicles.
In Pennsylvania in 2009, 41 percent of single vehicle crashes involved teen drivers. Additionally, 27 percent of the driver deaths in the 16-20 age range were drunk drivers. In the U.S., 90 percent of all car crashes involve driver error, which means there are many ways teens can impact safety. Failure to use seat belts, speeding, drinking and driving, and distracted driving all contribute to car accidents and fatalities.
