Mass. Mall Escalators Lack Full State Inspections

In an article out this week in The Boston Globe, it was revealed that 75% of escalators in shopping malls across Massachusetts were not thoroughly or even regularly inspected over the past 3 years. According to the Globe, a mere 44 out of the 188 mall escalators in the Commonwealth were inspected over 2008 through 2010. Escalators were found to be passed over for an entire year and some weren’t inspected for 2 straight years in a row. The inspections that were conducted revealed that the escalators under review required repairs in over 50% of inspections. There were 22 instances where mall escalators had to be shut down for safety reasons. The main issue in all of this inspection process is simply that the state does have enough inspectors to check over the 34,000 elevators and about 1,000 escalators within Massachusetts.
