Do you know what a “blessing bag” is? If you don’t, allow us to give you a brief rundown of what blessing bags are, and how they can help out the people around us who are the most in need.
A blessing bag (usually a Ziploc) contains small, non-perishable items meant to help out a person less fortunate who might be down on his or her luck. These items, while small, are truly blessings for someone who may not have much. At SLS Consulting, we’ve made it a point to pass these bags out to those who are less fortunate than we are, and are often greeted with sincere smiles from the people we’re helping out.
So what do you need to get started?
- Large Ziploc bags
- Wash cloths
- Toothbrushes
- Travel toothpaste
- Soap
- Smaller Ziploc bags (to keep soap fragrance contained)
- Socks
- Rain poncho
- Antibacterial wipes
- Any small, non-perishable, individually packaged food items
The above items can all be considered essentials in one context or another, but it’s important to remember that there isn’t one, set way to create a blessing bag. You can really include anything you want, and the main thing to keep in mind when choosing items is to try to place yourself into the shoes of someone less fortunate than you are. If you didn’t have a home, and survived off of the kindness of others and assistance from local homeless shelters, what type of items would you appreciate most? We figured that the essentials above are a good start, but there’s always room for variation of some kind. For instance, we’ve even differentiated between “male” and “female” blessing bags, with the female bags containing feminine hygiene products.
The team at SLS Consulting recently went out and distributed blessing bags in our own neighborhood. Some of us even keep a stash in our cars so that we can pass them out whenever we encounter someone who might benefit from one. Regardless of how you choose to distribute your blessing bags, it’s important to remember that people are in need year-round, and that even the smallest of gestures can mean the world to a person that is in need.
There is no set price on how much a blessing bag should cost, or how many items can go into one. Regardless of how big or small your bags are though, you can rest assured that they will mean the world to someone. No two blessings are alike, but all blessings are welcomed.
