Once again, Google has rolled out another update to its Panda algorithm, taking aim at spam and duplicate content, particularly within the online legal industry. According to Google, the Panda 4.0 update is designed to aggressively filter out websites with “thin,” low-quality content from appearing in the top rankings.
In an attempt to meet Google’s ever-increasing emphasis on original quality information over the past few years, many law firms have been relying on SEO companies to build up high-quality content for their web pages. Unfortunately, turning to just any company claiming to be a SEO expert has caught up with many of these law firms.
As Google comes up with new ways to identify and penalize aggressive violations of their search engine guidelines, also known as “black hat” SEO tactics, unscrupulous SEO companies are being exposed and their clients are feeling the sting of losing business.
Are Third-Party Marketers Liable for Poor SEO Results?
One law firm recently experienced such unfavorable results after discovering that their chosen third-party SEO provider was using spammy techniques and decided to take action by filing a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) lawsuit.
According to SearchEngineWatch.com, the law firm claimed that the search engine optimization company, The Rainmaker Institute, had knowingly violated Google’s webmaster guidelines, putting the firm’s website at risk of triggering penalties that would damage the business. It was not that the SEO provider failed to improve the law firm’s rankings, but that the techniques being used were fraudulent and damaging.
The case is currently moving forward in the legal system and many in the SEO community eagerly await the outcome.
